William E. Moritz, director of the Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR) at Michigan State University (MSU) during the ANR Week Luncheon on March 8.

Moritz is one of three individuals who will be recognized with the Distinguished Service Award, which is given to individuals or partners who have made outstanding contributions to Michigan’s agriculture and natural resources industries, and who possess high standards of integrity and character and positively reflect and enhance the prestige of the CANR. They demonstrate a commitment to MSU and the CANR by continuing outstanding levels of leadership and volunteerism at the state, national or international level.

Before his appointment as director, Moritz was deputy director of the MDNR. He also served as executive director of Safari Club International and the Safari Club International Foundation. Before that, and since 1993, he has worked in a variety of roles within the MDNR.

Moritz represented the MDNR in a recent overhaul of the Partnership for Ecosystem Research and Management (PERM), and he has served as co-chair of the PERM board of advisors since 2013. He has been a strong supporter and facilitator of research partnerships between MSU and the MDNR.

Moritz provided key leadership in MSU-MDNR efforts to manage bovine tuberculosis in Michigan during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife and serves as a mentor for several students.

The other Distinguished Service Award recipients are:

      •          Don Sklarczyk

      •          John Bakker

Tickets for the luncheon are on sale for $30 and are available at www.anrweek.anr.msu.edu.

The luncheon will be hosted by the CANR, MSUAgBioResearch, MSU Extension and the CANRAlumni Association, with support from Consumers Energy and DTE Energy.
