A Matter of Balance: Feeding Our Crops and Protecting Our Water in a Changing Climate

On-farm nutrient management has greatly improved in the past twenty-five years yet water quality problems associated with algae blooms and oxygen depletion persist in Lake Erie, Saginaw Bay and other waterways. Join the Michigan Chapter Soil and Water Conservation Society during ANR Week to examine the linkage between cropping practices and nutrient enrichment of runoff and drainage water, and offer practical solutions for capturing and cycling nitrogen, phosphorus and other potential contaminants in the root zone.

Michigan State Rabbit Breeders Association, Inc., Annual Convention and Show

The expanded Rabbit School takes place Friday at 1 p.m. in the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. Many noted rabbit and cavy judges from around the country will conduct seminars. Seminar admission is free, but preregistration is requested so that all who attend will receive an informational folder on each presentation.

Michigan’s Invasive Plant Collaborative Exchange

MSU Extension offers an 8-hour ServSafe training. ServSafe is a national certification program. This class is designed for anyone working in the food service industry, including nonprofit organizations.

This Michigan Natural Shoreline Partnership certification program is designed for marine and landscape contractors who work on inland lake shorelines. This program will equip them to expand their businesses to better serve lakefront property owners looking for alternatives to turf grass and sea wall to the water’s edge.

Pullorum Certification Workshop

Location: MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education

All poultry and game birds except waterfowl and pigeons are required to be blood tested for Pullorum disease before exhibition or movement within the state. Most states require that all poultry, including game birds, have a negative Pullorum test to enter. At this workshop, participants will learn how to do the test and how to fill out the associated paperwork.

Herd Health Management: Animal Caretaker Health and Safety

Agriculture is an industry with significant health and safety hazards. Farm businesses and farm families are significantly affected when a work-related injury, illness or death occurs. This session will highlight some agricultural hazards contributing to injury and illness within the swine and dairy industries, such as noise, heat stress, zoonotic disease and manure handling.

Have you ever wondered how locally grown or caught fish got from the water to your plate? Michigan has a vibrant commercial fishery, as well as an aquaculture industry poised for growth. Learn more about locally grown and wild Michigan seafood at the first annual Michigan Seafood Summit. Fisheries will be explored in two half-day sessions: from an industry perspective (morning) and from a consumer perspective (afternoon). Michigan Seafood Feast ‒ a five-course dinner prepared by renowned Michigan chefs tops off the summit.
